Many foreigners find the Korean age system confusing because it differs significantly from the international (or Western) age system used worldwide.
- A person is considered 1 year old at birth.
- Everyoneโs age increases by 1 on January 1st, regardless of their actual birthday.
For example, if a baby is born on December 31st, the next day (January 1st) they will be considered 2 years old.
International age is based on your actual birthday:
- You start at 0 at birth.
- Your age increases by 1 on your birthday each year.
Since 2023, Korea officially uses international age for legal and administrative purposes. However, Korean age is still commonly used socially.
